Psychedelic
lighted dance floors and Vegas style numbers dazzle
Virginia Espiritu in her recent trip to Club Mwah.
FILIPINOS
HAVE A THING FOR DRAMA. Over the top melodramatic
soap operas and teeny bopper flicks, neon lights
and the avante garde and world class designs all
attest to it. And judging from the tall, tawny
man standing at the entrance, swathed off a Carnaval
float, it seems that the latest stage is set.
Welcome
to Club Mwah, part dance club, part theatre, all
Vegas glitz. A typical night begins with Bedazzled
- a Las Vegas inspired revue featuring adaptations
of Broadway hits, and original, avante garde productions
infused with larrge doses of comedy. One number
imitates the jailhouse scene from Chicago. Lights
flashed overhead, and the audience is open mouthed
in amazement. The costumes are kitsch to the side
of style, and even suggests a hint of Versace.
And after
the sequined high kicking is done, the audience
participates in some all night bumping and grinding.
Since
its opening, Club Mwah's glam-super club type
atmosphere has attracted the who's who of the
local entertainment and lifestyle scene.
The Club,
according to owners Cris Nicolas and Pocholo Malillin,
is a cross between two entertainment landmarks:
Studio 54 in New York, a one time ultra-fashionable
discotheque during the last days of disco in the
70's/80's era and the opulent Caesar's Palace
in Las Vegas. "By combining together the design
of these two ground symbols of lifestyle and excess,"
says Nicolas. "You expect nothing less." The Club's
state-of-the-art psychedelic dance floor features
multi-blinking lights that beat rhythmically to
the music. The teo side ledges on the opposite
wall provide for a stunning view of the other
dancing beauties.
Another
innovation is the stage's hydraulic lift center
which gives performers a certain drama in entrances
or exits. The hydraulic technology gives every
performance as extra visual impact. Every show
becomes even more dramatic and sensational.
